The Oral-B Pro range is the entry point to Oral-B's rechargeable brushes, and the Pro 1 and Pro 3 are the two names most people compare. They look almost the same in the box, so it is fair to ask what the higher number actually adds. This comparison explains the differences that matter day to day: modes, pressure feedback, timer, heads and battery. It also covers when it makes more sense to skip both and look at an Oral-B iO. Versions and bundles change often, so always check the exact listing before you buy.

Pro 1 and Pro 3 side by side

The table sums up the usual differences between the two handles. Oral-B sells several versions of each, often with different bundles, colours and heads, so treat this as a guide to the families rather than one specific box.

Modes: the main practical difference

Most Pro 1 versions have a single Daily Clean mode. That is enough for many people, and it keeps the handle simple: press the button, brush for two minutes, done.

The Pro 3 normally adds Sensitive and Whitening modes. Sensitive runs the head more gently, which some people prefer if their gums feel tender or they are new to electric brushes. Whitening is a polishing pattern; it is a mode, not a promise of whiter teeth. If you think you will use a gentler mode, that alone is a good reason to choose the Pro 3. Our guide to electric toothbrush modes explains what each mode changes.

Pressure light and timer

Both handles warn you if you press too hard. On the Pro 3 this is a light ring around the handle that you can see in the mirror from any side, and many versions show green when pressure is right and red when it is too much. The Pro 1 warning is simpler and differs between versions, so check the listing if visible feedback matters to you.

The timer is the same idea on both. The brush pauses briefly every 30 seconds to prompt you to move to the next quarter of your mouth, and gives a longer signal at two minutes, matching the NHS advice to brush for about two minutes twice a day. Our article on toothbrush pressure sensors explains how the sensors work.

Heads, battery and charging

Both handles take the classic Oral-B round heads, such as CrossAction, Precision Clean and Sensitive Clean. They do not take iO heads. Plan on changing the head about every three months, as the NHS advises; our brush-head planner works out how many heads a household needs per year.

Oral-B quotes battery life of up to about two weeks of typical use for its Pro handles, but the real figure depends on how often and how long you brush. Both charge on the standard Oral-B inductive stand with a two-pin plug, which suits a UK shaver socket. Our battery-days check converts the quoted figure to your own routine.

When to skip both and look at an iO

The Pro range covers the essentials. An Oral-B iO adds a magnetic drive that many people find quieter and smoother, a smart pressure sensor that also tells you when you press too softly, and on higher models a display and app guidance. If you are spending more than the price of a Pro 3, compare what an iO adds first.

Our Oral-B iO vs Pro 3 comparison covers that step in detail, and our guide to Oral-B iO models compared lists the iO handles we cover.

Which one suits whom

Choose the Pro 1 if you want a dependable round-head brush with a timer, you use one mode and you do not mind simpler pressure feedback. Choose the Pro 3 if you want a Sensitive mode, a clearer pressure light you can see while brushing, or a bundle with a travel case.

  • One person, one mode, home use: Pro 1.
  • Tender gums or new to electric brushes: Pro 3 for the Sensitive mode.
  • Frequent travel: a Pro 3 bundle with a case, such as the 3500.
  • Want app feedback or a quieter drive: look at the iO range.

Frequently asked questions

Do Pro 1 and Pro 3 use the same heads? Yes. Both take classic Oral-B round heads, so you can share packs between them.

Is the Pro 3 gentler than the Pro 1? Only if you use its Sensitive mode. On Daily Clean the action is very similar.

Does the Pro 3 connect to an app? Most Pro 3 versions do not. App connection is a feature of the iO range and some older Smart and Genius models.

Will a Pro 3 charge from a shaver socket? Yes, if it comes with the usual two-pin charger. See charging from a UK shaver socket.
