How we pick

Each buying guide on Brush and Floss covers one type of product and compares five to eight listings. This page explains how that shortlist is made and what the comparison is based on.

In short

We read the listings, not the products. The picks and descriptions are based on what the Amazon listings and the manufacturers state. We have not handled, measured or tested the products ourselves, and our pages never claim otherwise.

What goes into a buying guide

  • The right type of product. A product has to answer the question the guide asks, not just be loosely related to the topic.
  • Facts from the listing.Dimensions, materials, power and what is in the box come from the listing. Where a detail is missing, the table says "n/a" (not stated).
  • No prices on this site.Prices change often. You can see the current price on Amazon with the "Check price on Amazon" button.

What the labels mean

Labels such as "Best overall" or "Best value" are our reading of the listings, not test results and not customer ratings. The order is an editorial judgement of how well each listing fits the job.

What this method cannot tell you

  • How a brush or flosser feels in your mouth.
  • How loud it sounds, beyond any figure the maker quotes.
  • How many days the battery really lasts on your own routine.
  • How long the handle and the charger last in everyday use.

For those questions it is worth reading recent customer reviews on the listing itself. The "Good to know" list under each product names what the listing leaves open.

When a product disappears

If a product is no longer available, we replace it with a comparable one at the next update. Page addresses do not change.
