Premium electric toothbrushes list anything from three to eight modes, with names that vary between brands and even between models. It is easy to assume more is better, but most modes are variations on speed and pattern rather than separate technologies. This guide explains what the common modes do on Oral-B and Philips Sonicare brushes, how intensity settings fit in, and how to decide how many you really need. If you have sensitivity or gum concerns, ask your dentist which settings to use.

The common modes

Names differ, but most brushes draw from the same set. The table describes each in general terms, based on maker descriptions. Check your manual for exactly how your model behaves.

Clean vs White on Sonicare

A common question is how Sonicare's Clean and White modes differ. Clean is the standard two-minute mode. White or White+ adds a phase with a different motion that Philips describes as focusing on surface stains on the front teeth, and it usually runs longer than two minutes. It is a change in pattern and time, not a whitening treatment.

Our Sonicare models compared guide lists the number of modes on each model, from four on the DiamondClean 9000 to eight on the Next-Gen 9900 Prestige, according to the listings.

Oral-B iO and Pro 3 modes

The Oral-B Pro 3 usually offers three modes, such as Daily Clean, Sensitive and Whitening. iO models go further. According to the listings, the iO5 to iO7 have five modes, and the iO9 and iO10 have seven, which can include Daily Clean, Sensitive, Super Sensitive, Intense, Whiten, Gum Care and Tongue Clean.

Some iO models also have a Smart Adapt mode, which Oral-B says adjusts rotation and pressure. Our Oral-B iO models compared guide lists modes for each model.

Modes vs intensity

Many Sonicare handles have three intensity levels within each mode, so you can run Clean at low, medium or high. Oral-B iO modes tend to bundle speed into the mode itself. On some premium models, the handle chooses mode and intensity automatically: Sonicare's BrushSync can pair a mode with the head it detects, and SenseIQ adjusts intensity as you brush.

If you find the standard setting too strong, a sensitive mode or a lower intensity is the first thing to try. Our gentle mode guide covers brushes with these options.

Note:Modes change how the brush moves. They do not treat sensitivity, gum disease or staining. Speak to your dentist if you have concerns.

How many modes do you need?

Most people settle on one everyday mode and perhaps a sensitive option. Extra modes can be useful if you share a handle with someone who prefers a different feel, or if you like a longer session now and then.

  • One user, no sensitivity: a daily mode is enough
  • Sensitive teeth or gums: look for a sensitive mode or intensity levels
  • Shared handle: more modes or intensity levels help each person
  • Likes variety: a model with whitening and gum care modes

Timers and pacers in every mode

Almost every mode includes a two-minute timer, in line with the NHS advice to brush for about two minutes twice a day. Oral-B and Sonicare also use a 30-second pacer that pauses or pulses to tell you to move to the next quarter of your mouth. Our guide on how to use an electric toothbrush explains how to use the pacer.
