In short
Start with the power: check the socket is on and, for a shaver socket, that the switch suits the charger. Then make sure the handle sits upright and fully on the stand or in the glass, and clean the base of the handle and the charger. A battery that has run completely flat can take a while to show a light. If it still will not charge, try a known-good charger that Philips lists for your model, then contact Philips support.

A Sonicare that will not charge is usually not broken. Most cases come down to power to the charger, how the handle sits on it, dirt on the contact area, or a battery that has been left completely flat. Sonicare chargers work by induction, so the handle needs to sit in exactly the right spot. This guide walks through each cause in order, explains how glass, stand and USB travel case chargers differ, and covers which chargers fit which handles. Steps vary between models, so check your manual for anything specific to yours.
Quick checks
- 1
Check the socket works by plugging in something else, such as a phone charger in another room.
- 2
If you use a bathroom shaver socket, check its voltage switch is set correctly for the charger and that the socket is switched on.
- 3
Make sure the plug is pushed fully in.
- 4
Stand the handle upright on the charger, fully seated, with the head attached or removed as your manual shows.
- 5
Wait several minutes and look for the battery light.
Glass, stand and travel case chargers
Glass chargers on DiamondClean models work only when the glass sits on its base and the handle stands upright inside the glass. The glass must be the one designed for that base. If the handle leans, it may not charge.
Stand chargers need the handle placed squarely on the post. Turn it slightly until it sits flat.
USB travel cases need a suitable USB power source. Try the wall adaptor supplied, or a different USB adaptor, and check the cable. Some cases charge the handle only when the case itself has power.
| Charger | Check |
|---|---|
| Charging glass | Glass on base, handle upright inside, base plugged in |
| Charging stand | Handle seated flat on the post |
| USB travel case | USB adaptor working, cable seated, handle placed correctly |
| Shaver socket | Switch on and set to the right voltage |
Dirty contacts and residue
Toothpaste and limescale can build up on the base of the handle and the charger. Unplug the charger, wipe both with a damp cloth, dry them fully and try again. Do not use abrasive cleaners or poke anything into the charger.

A completely flat battery
If the handle has been left unused for weeks or months, the battery may be deeply discharged. It can take some time on the charger before any light appears. Leave it charging for several hours before deciding it has failed.
If the light comes on but the brush runs only briefly, the battery may be worn. See electric toothbrush not holding charge.
Note:Do not open the handle or try to replace the battery yourself. If the handle is cracked, swollen or has been dropped in water, stop using it and contact Philips.
Are Sonicare chargers interchangeable?
Many Sonicare handles use inductive charging, and many chargers work across several models. But Philips does not promise that every charger works with every handle, and some newer models use different chargers or cases. Some models, such as Philips One by Sonicare, use a different power method entirely.
The safest route is to look up your handle's model number, usually starting with HX and printed on the handle or box, on the Philips website and buy a charger listed for it. Using a charger that is not listed may not work.
When to contact Philips
If you have tried a working socket, a clean handle and charger, several hours of charging and, ideally, a second compatible charger, the fault is likely in the handle or charger. Philips listings mention a 2-year limited warranty on many models, so check your purchase date and contact Philips support.

Frequently asked questions
Why is my Sonicare flashing on the charger? A flashing battery light during charging is usually normal. Check your manual for what each colour or pattern means on your model.
How long does a Sonicare take to charge? It varies by model and can take many hours. See how long to charge an electric toothbrush.
Can I charge a Sonicare from a shaver socket? Yes, UK listings mention a two-pin bathroom plug. Make sure the socket is switched on and set correctly.
Will a different Sonicare charger work? Often, but not always. Check that Philips lists the charger for your handle's model number.
