The DiamondClean 9000 and the DiamondClean Prestige 9900 are the two Sonicare handles most people shortlist at the top of the range. They look alike and share Sonicare's sonic action, so the choice comes down to a few features and what is in the box. This comparison uses the Amazon listing facts for the versions in our guides: the DiamondClean 9000 HX9911/63 and the DiamondClean 9900 Prestige HX9992/43. Bundles vary, so check the listing you are looking at.

Listing facts side by side

The table shows what each listing states. Battery days are only given on the 9000 listing, so the 9900 cell says not stated.

SenseIQ: the main difference

On the 9900 Prestige, the listing says SenseIQ automatically adapts to your brushing by decreasing the intensity when you press too hard. The light ring also flashes as a reminder. The DiamondClean 9000 has the light ring warning but leaves the intensity to you.

If you know you scrub, SenseIQ is a useful safety net while you learn a lighter touch. If you already brush gently, the 9000's light ring gives you the same warning without the automatic change. Our article on toothbrush pressure sensors explains the difference.

Modes and intensities

The 9000 gives four modes, Clean, White+, Gum Health and Deep Clean+, and three intensities, so twelve combinations in all. The 9900 Prestige listing gives five modes and three intensities. In daily use most people settle on one or two combinations, so the extra mode is a small factor.

Both handles quote 62,000 movements per minute for Sonicare's sonic action on the 9000 listing; see how a sonic toothbrush works for what that figure means.

Heads and running costs

The 9000 ships with one C3 Premium Plaque Control head. The 9900 Prestige ships with several A3 Premium All-in-One heads; the bullet list says four and the spec table says three, so check the box contents on the listing. Either way, the Prestige bundle covers more months before you buy heads.

Both handles take Sonicare click-on heads, and both remind you when a head is due for a change. Plan on about every three months, as the NHS advises. Our Sonicare brush heads explained article covers the A3, C3 and G3 families.

Charging and travel

The 9000 comes with a charging stand and a USB charging travel case, so you can top up from a laptop or USB plug on the road. The 9900 Prestige comes with a charging stand and a charging travel case, and its listing mentions USB charging. Both stands use a UK two-pin plug suited to a bathroom shaver socket.

Our guide to toothbrushes with a charging travel case compares both with Oral-B's charging cases.

Which one suits whom

Choose the DiamondClean 9000 if you want the flagship Sonicare feel, three intensities, four modes and a USB travel case, and you are happy to watch the light ring yourself. Choose the 9900 Prestige if you want SenseIQ to lower the intensity automatically when you press too hard, and you value more heads in the box.

Our Philips Sonicare models compared guide sets both against the DiamondClean Smart 9400 and the Next-Generation Prestige.

Gentle use and getting started

Both handles start new owners gently. Sonicare's Easy-start feature, present on many models, builds up the power over the first brushes so the sonic buzz feels less strong at first; check the manual for whether it is on and how to switch it off. Both also let you pick the lowest of three intensities, which is the simplest way to soften the feel on any day. If gentle brushing is your main reason for buying, our guide to brushes with gentle modes and pressure sensors includes both handles alongside Oral-B models. For technique, see how to use a Philips Sonicare toothbrush.
