In short
If a Philips Power Flosser runs but sprays weakly or not at all, the reservoir is usually not seated or filled, the nozzle is not clicked in, or scale is blocking the flow. If it does not switch on, charge it fully and check the charger. Refill, reseat the reservoir and nozzle, run it over the sink on the highest setting and descale if your water is hard. If it still fails, contact Philips.

Philips sells its Sonicare Power Flosser in cordless versions, such as the Cordless Power Flosser 3000, and in countertop versions. They work like other water flossers: a pump draws water from a reservoir and sends it through a nozzle in pulses. When something goes wrong, it is usually one of a few simple things: power, reservoir, nozzle or scale. This guide takes you through the checks in order and explains when to contact Philips. Details vary by model, so keep the manual to hand.
Match the symptom to the cause
Start with the symptom you see. The table points you to the likely cause and the section below that covers it.
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| Will not switch on | Flat battery, charger not connected, or travel lock on some models |
| Runs but no water | Reservoir empty, not seated, or air in the pump |
| Weak or spluttering jet | Nozzle not clicked in, low setting, scale |
| Leaks | Reservoir or nozzle seal |
| Stops mid-session | Low battery or timer finishing |
Power and charging
For a cordless Power Flosser, charge it fully as described in the manual and check the charging light. If it will not charge, try another socket or USB power source if your model charges by USB, and check the lead for damage. Countertop models need to be plugged in and switched on at the socket.
Some Philips products have a travel lock to stop them switching on in a bag. If the flosser does nothing at all after charging, check the manual for whether your model has one and how to unlock it. Our article on how long to charge an electric toothbrush covers first charges in general.
Reservoir and priming
On the cordless model the reservoir is part of the handle and must be clicked or closed fully. On countertop models the tank must sit firmly on the base. If the reservoir is loose, the pump draws air instead of water.
Fill with lukewarm water, reseat the reservoir, point the nozzle into the sink and run the flosser on its highest setting for a few seconds. This pushes air out of the pump. Then drop back to your normal setting.
- 1
Fill the reservoir with lukewarm water.
- 2
Seat or close it firmly.
- 3
Point the nozzle into the sink.
- 4
Run on the highest setting for a few seconds.
- 5
Return to your usual setting.
Nozzle checks
A nozzle that is not clicked fully into place leaks and gives a weak jet. Remove it, check it for cracks or blockages, and push it back in until it clicks. Philips sells several nozzle types for the Power Flosser, including Quad Stream nozzles on some models; make sure the nozzle matches your model.
Nozzles wear and should be replaced from time to time, as the manual suggests. A worn or blocked nozzle is a common cause of a jet that sprays sideways.
Scale and cleaning
Hard water leaves scale in the pump and nozzle, which slowly reduces the jet. If your flosser has weakened over months, descale it as the manual describes, often with a vinegar and water solution run through the unit, followed by plain water. Empty and dry the reservoir after each use, especially if you add mouthwash.
Our guide to how to clean and descale a water flosser covers the routine, and can you put mouthwash in a water flosser? explains what to keep out of the tank.
When to contact Philips
If the flosser is charged, the reservoir and nozzle are seated, it has been descaled and it still does not spray, the pump may be faulty. Stop using it and contact Philips or the retailer with your proof of purchase. Philips offers warranties on its oral care products; check the terms for your model.
If you are choosing a replacement, our Waterpik vs Philips Power Flosser comparison sets the main options side by side, and cordless vs countertop water flosser helps you choose a design.
Note:Do not open the flosser or its battery compartment. Cordless models contain a sealed lithium-ion battery. Unplug countertop models before cleaning.
Pairing with a toothbrush
Philips also sells bundles that pair a DiamondClean toothbrush with a Power Flosser. If you are replacing both, our Philips Sonicare models compared guide covers the premium Sonicare handles.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Power Flosser make noise but no water comes out? Usually the reservoir is empty or not seated, or there is air in the pump. Refill, reseat and run it on high for a few seconds.
How do I use a Sonicare Power Flosser? Lean over the sink, start on the lowest setting and trace along the gumline, pausing between teeth. See how to use a water flosser.
Can I use mouthwash in a Power Flosser? Check the manual. If allowed, dilute it and rinse with plain water afterwards.
How often should I replace the nozzle? Follow the interval in your manual, and sooner if it is cracked or the jet sprays sideways.
