Oral-B's rechargeable line-up starts with the Vitality range, steps up to the Pro range and then to the iO. The Vitality Pro and Pro 3 are often compared because they sit next to each other and look similar. This article sets out what really differs between them: the brushing action, pressure feedback, modes, battery and heads. It also explains when the Smart range or an iO is worth a look instead. Versions vary, so check each listing for the exact features of the bundle in front of you.

Vitality Pro and Pro 3 side by side

The table shows the usual differences between the two families. Oral-B changes bundles and names often, so confirm details on the listing.

Brushing action: 2D against 3D

Oral-B describes the Vitality movement as oscillating and rotating, often called 2D. The Pro range adds pulsations, a fast in-and-out movement on top of the rotation, which Oral-B calls 3D. In use, the Pro 3 feels more energetic and is a little louder; the Vitality Pro feels smoother and simpler.

Neither is a medical choice. The NHS says that what matters most is brushing twice a day for about two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, covering every surface. Pick the feel you are happy to use every day.

Pressure feedback

Pressing too hard is a common habit with electric brushes, because the head does the work for you. The Pro 3 has a light ring that you can see in the mirror from any angle, showing red when you press too hard. Many versions also show green when the pressure is right.

Vitality models are simpler, and many do not show a visible pressure warning. If you know you tend to scrub, the Pro 3 is the safer buy for building a lighter habit. Our article on toothbrush pressure sensors explains the different types.

Modes, battery and heads

Both handles are usually sold with three modes, including a gentler Sensitive mode. Battery figures quoted by Oral-B are typically longer for the Pro range than for Vitality models, but real days depend on your routine; our battery-days check converts quoted figures for you.

Both take the full set of classic Oral-B round heads, so CrossAction, Precision Clean and Sensitive Clean heads fit either handle. Neither takes iO heads. See are electric toothbrush heads universal? for what fits what.

What about the Smart 4 and the iO?

The Smart range sat above the Pro range and added extras such as Bluetooth and a separate timer display on some versions. Availability in the UK changes, so compare any Smart listing feature by feature with the Pro 3.

If you want app feedback, a display or a quieter magnetic drive, the Oral-B iO is the current step up. Our Oral-B iO vs Pro 3 comparison covers that move, and our guide to premium electric toothbrushes compares flagship iO and Sonicare handles.

Which one suits whom

The Vitality Pro suits someone who wants a basic rechargeable brush with a timer and a round head, and who already brushes with a light touch. The Pro 3 suits anyone who wants visible pressure feedback while brushing, or who likes the livelier pulsating action.

  • Light brusher, simple needs: Vitality Pro.
  • Tends to scrub: Pro 3 for the pressure light.
  • Wants app or display: Oral-B iO.

Noise, feel and getting used to it

Both brushes take a few days to get used to if you are moving from a manual brush. The head does the movement, so you guide it slowly from tooth to tooth rather than scrubbing. The Pro 3 pulsations make a slightly busier buzz and a livelier feel on the teeth, which some people like and others find too much at first. The Sensitive mode on either handle softens the action while you adjust. If you share a bathroom early in the morning, the quieter of the two is usually the Vitality Pro, but the difference is modest. Our guide to how to use an electric toothbrush covers technique for either.
