Sonicare Next-Gen DiamondClean 8500: display and 4 heads

The Next-Generation DiamondClean 8500 sits in the middle of the new Sonicare range, and its strength is the box. Four A3 All-in-One heads, a charging travel case and a charging base with glass come with a handle that has an interactive display and 18 settings. It does not have the coverage tracking of the DiamondClean 9000, but for many people the extra heads and the charging case are worth more than that feature.

Our take

Eighteen settings chosen on screen

Philips lists six modes and three intensities, set up on the interactive display before you brush. That is one more mode than the DiamondClean 8000. The listing does not name the six modes, so you will need the manual or the screen itself to see what the extra one is.

Smart pressure feedback works in real time and glows green when pressure is right, then shows where to adjust after brushing. Coverage feedback is not listed, which is the main thing separating this model from the 9000.

Four heads and two ways to charge

The set includes the handle, four A3 All-in-One heads, a charging travel case and a charging base with glass. Four heads is the most in the Next-Generation line-up on this site, and with Philips suggesting regular head changes, that is a meaningful saving over buying spares separately.

Having both a charging case and a glass means the brush can live on the glass at home and travel in its case without packing the base. Battery life is not stated in the listing, so the case is your safety net on long trips.

App and warranty

The Sonicare app tracks progress, shows real-time feedback and gives technique tips. Bluetooth is listed in the specs. Philips covers the brush with a two-year limited warranty and offers a 100-day money-back guarantee.

Amazon lists the package weight as 762 g, which includes the glass and case.

Choosing between neighbours

The Next-Gen DiamondClean 8000 has five modes, one head and a travel case that does not charge. The Next-Gen DiamondClean 9000 adds coverage feedback and a seventh mode but comes with two heads. If coverage tracking is not something you would use, the 8500 is the better stocked choice.

Verdict

The DiamondClean 8500 suits anyone who wants a Sonicare with a display, green pressure feedback, a charging travel case and enough heads for a long stretch. Choose the Next-Gen DiamondClean 9000 if you want the brush to show which areas you have finished, or the 8000 if you rarely travel and only need one head to start.
