# Why does my electric toothbrush pause every 30 seconds?

**In short:** The pause every 30 seconds is a quadrant timer. It splits two minutes of brushing into four equal parts and prompts you to move to the next quarter of your mouth. At two minutes, Oral-B brushes give a longer stutter and keep running, while many Sonicare brushes switch off with their SmarTimer. It is a feature, not a fault, and some models let you change it.

If your new electric toothbrush seems to hiccup every half minute, or a Sonicare appears to stop after 30 seconds, it is almost certainly doing what it was designed to do. Both Oral-B and Philips build timers into their brushes to help you brush for the time the NHS suggests and to spread it evenly round your mouth. This guide explains what the pauses mean on each brand, what happens at two minutes, how pressure sensors can also change the sound, and whether you can switch the timer off.

## The 30-second quadrant timer

The NHS advises brushing for about two minutes twice a day. Most people underestimate how long that is, and many spend more time on the front teeth than the back. A quadrant timer divides the two minutes into four 30-second sections: upper right, upper left, lower left and lower right, or whatever order you prefer.

Every 30 seconds the brush gives a short signal, such as a stutter, a change in sound or a brief pause. That is your cue to move on. Philips calls it the Quadpacer; Oral-B calls it a professional timer on many handles.

## What each brand does

The details vary by model, so check the manual, but the general pattern is as follows.

| Brand | Every 30 seconds | At two minutes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Oral-B Pro and Vitality | Short stutter | Longer stutter, keeps running |
| Oral-B iO | Signal, plus display or light cues on some models | Signal; display may show a smile |
| Philips Sonicare | Short pause or change in sound (Quadpacer) | Switches off (SmarTimer) |

Typical timer behaviour

## Sonicare stops after 30 seconds

On a Sonicare, the Quadpacer pause can feel like the brush has stopped. Keep brushing and it carries on. If it genuinely switches off after 30 seconds, check the battery, as a low battery can cut the session short; see [Philips Sonicare not charging](https://brushandfloss.co.uk/blog/philips-sonicare-not-charging) and [Philips Sonicare not working](https://brushandfloss.co.uk/blog/philips-sonicare-not-working).

Many Sonicare handles also have Easy-start, which ramps the power up gradually over the first brushes. That changes the sound and feel too, and is separate from the timer.

## Pressure sensors can change the sound

A pause or change in sound that is not at a 30-second mark may be the pressure sensor. On Oral-B Pro handles, pressing too hard can stop the pulsations and the red light comes on. On the Sonicare Prestige 9900, SenseIQ lowers the intensity when you press too hard. Ease off and the full action returns.

## Can you switch the timer off?

Some models let you change timer settings. On some Sonicare handles you can turn the Quadpacer or Easy-start on or off with a button sequence while the handle is on the charger. On connected Oral-B iO models, some settings can be adjusted in the app. Not every model allows it, so check the manual.

Most people find the prompts useful once they are used to them. If you brush for longer than two minutes, for example with braces, you can simply keep going on an Oral-B or restart a Sonicare.

## How to use the prompts well

Use the prompts to build a fixed route round your mouth that you follow every time.

1. Start in the same quarter every time, for example upper right outside.
2. Cover outer, inner and chewing surfaces in that quarter.
3. Move on at each 30-second signal.
4. Finish at two minutes, spit and do not rinse, as the NHS advises.

## Choosing a brush with good feedback

If you want more than a timer, connected handles show which areas you have covered. ## Timers on children's brushes

Children's electric brushes often use the same idea in a friendlier way, with music, lights or app games that change every 30 seconds and finish at two minutes. The aim is the same: help them brush for the full time and move round the mouth. If a child's brush seems to stop early, check whether it has a shorter timer setting for younger children, as some do. Our article on [when a child can use an electric toothbrush](https://brushandfloss.co.uk/blog/electric-toothbrush-for-children) covers age guidance and supervision, which the NHS advises for young children.

## Frequently asked questions

**Why does my Oral-B stutter while I brush?** A short stutter every 30 seconds is the quadrant timer. A longer one marks two minutes.

**Why does my Sonicare keep buzzing differently?** The Quadpacer changes the sound every 30 seconds, and Easy-start changes the power over the first brushes.

**Is the pause a sign of a low battery?** Not usually. A low battery shows on the battery light and may cut the session short.

**Can I brush longer than two minutes?** Yes. Oral-B handles keep running; restart a Sonicare if needed.
